Is Ledaig 10 Year an Approachable Whisky?

Ledaig 10 Year is a delicious whisky, but it packed with peat and smoke flavors.

If you’re a fan of peated Scotch whisky, you will almost certainly enjoy this one.

For those of you who don’t enjoy peat (always a mystery to me), this one might pack quite a punch for you.

Is Ledaig 10 Year Complex?

Ledaig 10 Year has a lot of complexity and depth of flavor.

Immediately on the nose, you’ll get a ton of peat, smoke, and briny seaside notes.

I love all of these aspects so it was an absolute delight to experience for the first time.

I’m not sure exactly what I was expecting when I purchased this bottle, but it definitely greeted me with a pleasant surprise.

On the palate, you get all of the peat, smoke, brine, and ocean sea salt from the nose, but it incorporated a lot of sweet honey and light fruits paired with spices and smoked meat flavors.

It almost reminds me of a nice lemon peppered beef jerky or a grilled citrus jerk chicken.

Strange tasting notes, I know… but it takes me back to a meal I had while I was in St. Lucia and it was just delicious.

Clearly, the peat and smoke is the highlight of the show here, but the amount of citrus and spice flavors that shine through really add an excellent level of depth to this whisky.

The finish is also quite nice.

Since it is non-chill filtered, you get a rich oily mouthfeel full of flavor that lingers for quite a while after each sip.

What are Ledaig 10 Year’s strongest attributes/flavors?

Ledaig 10 Year’s strongest attribute is definitely it’s delicate balance between peat, smoke, brine, and smoked meats blended extremely well with bright citrus, light fruits, and rich pepper spice.

Ledaig (Tobermory Distillery) does not have its own peat bogs, so they source the peat from mainland Highlands which gives you a more earthy, dry, spicy peat than you’d get from Islay peated Scotches like Laphroaig and Ardbeg.

This is its biggest strength to me because I get to experience a ton of peat and smoke, but with a bit of a twist compared to many other peated Scotch whiskies I’ve tasted.

Is Ledaig 10 Year a go-to whisky?

Ledaig 10 Year is absolutely a go-to whisky.

It is on par with any other peated Scotch Whisky in the $60-75 price range and offers a wide variety of flavors that you can’t get in other whiskies.

It is non-chill filtered so it has the nice oily finish that I really enjoy while still being smooth and easy to drink.

I’ve already gone through two pours during this review which is a sign that I could easily drink a lot of this one without noticing.

I just keep coming back for more to see what other flavors I get.

Is Ledaig 10 Year priced accurately to its quality?

Ledaig 10 Year definitely delivers on its price tag.

I’ve tasted a lot of peated Scotch Whisky in my day and finding a great bottle is not easy to find at $75 or less.

Laphroaig Select and Ardbeg Wee Beastie are the two options from the big competitors, but this Ledaig 10 Year easily beats both of those options.

Another contender I would throw into the mix would be Big Peat (which I love), but even that one just isn’t quite as rich and full of flavor as this bottle of Ledaig 10 Year.

Ledaig 10 Year is an excellent buy at this price.

Conclusion for Ledaig 10 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I saw Ledaig 10 Year on the shelf at my local liquor store.

I had passed on it for a long while and my dad was actually the one to pick this bottle up and brought it over to my house for us to try.

We were both shocked at how delicious it was and how we never really hear about this bottle from any of our fellow peated Scotch lovers.

We’re both huge fans of Laphroaig, Octomore, Ardbeg, and Highland Park so when we cracked this bottle open and took our first sips, it reminded me a lot of our favorites.

The best thing about this bottle is that it offers a slightly different peat flavor profile that has a distinct ocean seaside brine flavor note that is quite enjoyable.

Laphroaig generally has a more iodine medicinal note so this bottle kind of swaps that with more salt and spice.

It almost reminds me a bit of the Bruichladdich 18 in that way which is one of my top whiskeys of the year.

Overall, if you can’t tell from the review, I’m extremely satisfied with this bottle and it definitely delivered on its price tag.

I will be keeping my eye out for more bottles from Ledaig even though we never see any others here in Pennsylvania.

I may even look into finding a bottle of Tobermory Scotch to see what their unpeated lineup is like.

So to conclude the review, if you’re a fan of peated Scotch, definitely give this bottle a shot.

I’m pretty sure you’ll enjoy it.
