Andy Reviews The Big Peat

If there is a “Peat Heaven” it is certainly to be found in a glass of Big Peat scotch whisky. When you take a sip of Big Peat a smooth and peaty adventure awaits.

Before I drank Big Peat I didn’t think it was possible to find a scotch that had the smoothness of a Glenlivet 18 pour perfectly balanced with the peaty-ness of Ardbeg and Caol Ila, but Big Peat delivers that experience.

Given that, Big Peat would be the perfect drink to give to a novice scotch drinker who is interested in peat expressions but not ready for Laphroaig, Ardbeg, or the other heavy hitters out there.

While the peat is certainly not subtle, the way it is experienced is. The peat is not overwhelming and for someone who enjoys peaty scotch, Big Peat could certainly be a daily drinker due to its utter smoothness and non-overpowering peaty flavors. – Andy

Frequently Asked Questions About The Big Peat

Is Big Peat an Approachable Whisky?

Big Peat is a peated but also sweet whisky. If you’re a beginner whisky drinker, this whisky may pack a punch for you but is an excellent entry point into peated Scotches. If you’re already a fan of Scotches like Laphroaig and Ardbeg, you’re probably going to be a fan of this one.

Since Big Peat includes Ardbeg and Caol Ila in the blend profile, it has strong peat flavors but it is balanced out well with the sweet flavors of Bowmore.

Is Big Peat Complex?

Big Peat is a pretty complex whisky. Since it’s a blend, it’s got layers from all 4 whiskies. The strongest is definitely the peat from the Ardbeg, Caol Ila, and Port Ellen. But one of the better aspects of Big Peat is that it blends the peat from Ardbeg and the sweeter flavors from Bowmore to create a well-balanced and easy-to-drink whisky.

What are Big Peat’s strongest attributes/flavors?

Big Peat’s strongest attribute is that it blends the bold smoke and peaty flavors of Ardbeg with the sweet and smooth flavors of Bowmore. I’m a fan of bold peaty scotches, but it’s nice to have a glass of Big Peat where I can still get a strong sense of the peat core without getting my taste buds blown out. Big Peat goes down with little to no burn and is balanced with sweet caramel and vanilla flavors.

Is Big Peat a go-to whisky?

If you’re a fan of Ardbeg, Laphroaig, and other peaty Scotches, The Big Peat could easily be a daily drinker. I find myself pouring myself a few glasses each time I sit down with The Big Peat.

Is Big Peat priced accurately to its quality?

Big Peat costs $55 which is a great price for what you get in the bottle. The more refined bottles of Ardbeg cost upwards of $80-100 and this bottle offers a similar experience to what those deliver.

Conclusion for The Big Peat

I would easily buy another bottle of The Big Peat and I can definitely see this bottle disappearing quickly from my collection.
