Is Augusta Old Route 8 an Approachable Whiskey?

Augusta Old Route 8 is a heavy hitter packed with flavor.

This is not a whiskey for beginners, but fans of big and bold well-aged bourbons will enjoy this one a ton.

Is Augusta Old Route 8 Complex?

Augusta Old Route 8 has a few layers of flavors that are expressed quite well.

The nose is full of pretty much everything you could ask for from a bourbon – caramel, vanilla, oak, dark fruit, oaky tannic spice, rye spice, baking spice, and hints of cinnamon, nutmeg, and hazelnut.

Initially, you get a whole ton of heat on the first sip but then afterward, you start to notice the flavors unfold.

Right off the bat, your taste buds are overloaded with heavy oak and rich caramel flavors.

As the whiskey settles in, the earthy leather and tobacco flavors start to settle in.

Then follow the oaky tannic spice, rye spice, and black pepper notes that really finish out the sip.

What are Augusta Old Route 8’s strongest attributes/flavors?

Augusta Old Route 8’s strongest attribute is the amount of oaky flavors present in this pour that continue to linger on your palate for a very long time after each sip.

Is Augusta Old Route 8 a go-to whiskey?

Augusta Old Route 8 is a very bold whiskey that I will be reserving for special occasions.

This is a pour I’d think of when it’s really cold outside, you’re sitting inside by the fire, and looking for a nice bit of warmth from a glass of whiskey.

Augusta Distillery only released 5000 “First Edition” single-barrel bottles from 34 barrels, so it’s not exactly the easiest whiskey to get a hold of.

This is their first offering in a line-up of 4 expressions that they say are coming to market over the next 5 years.

As of right now, this bottle is only available at the distillery and at select Kentucky and Ohio retailers.

Is Augusta Old Route 8 priced accurately to its quality?

If you’re a fan of big, heavy, oaky whiskeys…. this is absolutely worth the price of admission.

Augusta Old Route 8 Single Barrel does deliver on its price tag.

Conclusion for Augusta Old Route 8

I purchased this bottle of August Old Route 8 Single Barrel while I was visiting Ohio on a road trip.

I didn’t know much about the distillery but decided to purchase a bottle when I saw that it was such high proof and the first edition single barrel.

I was hoping that it was going to be full of oak and bold flavors and I was rewarded for my purchase.

If you see a bottle of this on the shelf, it’s worth the purchase.
