Interesting Facts About Yellowstone Bourbon

The President and Distiller of Yellowstone Bourbon’s name is Stephen B. Beam. He is often asked whether he is related to Jim Beam and he actually is!

Minor Case Beam was Jim Beam’s nephew and Steve and Paul Beam’s grandfather.

I’m a fan of this quote from Stephen Beam since I’m from the state of Pennsylvania:

“Growing up with that name [Beam] in Kentucky could be like growing up with the Hershey name in Pennsylvania. It was kind of hard to avoid the connections early on”

Of course, he got himself into the whiskey business and this beautiful bottle of Yellowstone Single Barrel whiskey is the result.

I’m new to the Yellowstone brand so I’m excited to give this bottle a shot.

What does it mean “Hand Picked Collection”?

This bottle was hand-picked by a representative from the Pennsylvania Fine Wine and Good Spirits Store.

The barrel number is on the front label and this means that it was picked specifically for its flavor qualities that the representative thought was the best offering from the barrels they sampled.

Yellowstone Single Barrel Tasting Notes

Nose: Buttery brown sugar and caramel, vanilla, rich toasted oak, cinnamon, baking spice, rye spice, and a hint of cinnamon apple

Palate: Heavy caramel and oak flavors that blast your taste buds on first sip. You then get a nice rush of baking spice, brown sugar, rye spice, pepper, and earthy, herbal flavors

Finish: Long heavy finish with lots of heat – leaves you with a rich mouthfeel full of heavy oak, brown sugar, and spicy rye spices and pepper

Is Yellowstone Single Barrel an Approachable Whiskey?

Yellowstone Single Barrel is not a whiskey for beginners.

It is extremely spicy from the high-rye bourbon mash bill as well as being non-chill filtered with a 59.5% ABV.

Is Yellowstone Single Barrel Complex?

Yellowstone Single Barrel has a lot of layers of flavor.

It starts out with an extremely rich nose.

I don’t often use “buttery” as a smell descriptor, but this whiskey reminds me of buttered cinnamon and brown sugar on toasted bread.

Everything you smell is rich and sweet sugar, caramel, vanilla, toasted oak, and spice.

The flavor profile is just as rich.

While it does blast your taste buds away initially, once the initial heat passes, you are rewarded with a very flavorful whiskey.

It’s full of caramel, oak, and vanilla, but is also followed up by a massive amount of rye spice and pepper and a very nice “Kentucky hug” as it goes down.

What are Yellowstone Single Barrel’s strongest attributes/flavors?

Yellowstone Single Barrel’s strongest attribute has to be the amount of rye spice flavors they pack into this whiskey.

It is extremely bold and the spice blends very nicely into the sweetness of the caramel, oak, and vanilla.

Is Yellowstone Single Barrel a go-to whiskey?

Yellowstone Single Barrel is a private selection from my liquor store in Pennsylvania called Fine Wine and Good Spirits.

Since this will be fairly limited, I will be saving this one for special occasions.

Even if I could get this on a regular basis, I think I would still save this one for nice occasions when I need a jolt of flavor and a real kick in the pants.

Is Yellowstone Single Barrel priced accurately to its quality?

Yellowstone Single Barrel delivers on its price tag.

For $70, you’re paying a little more money than you would for their standard bourbon, but the additional proof and a whole ton of additional flavor.

Conclusion for Yellowstone Single Barrel

I’m a big fan of this Yellowstone Single Barrel selection from Fine Wine and Good Spirits.

At first, I was a little taken aback by the amount of heat and spice on the first sip, but as I settled into my glass I really started enjoying the flavors.

This is definitely a whiskey where you’ll want to go in prepared for a big punch and then just sit back and appreciate the complex flavors this whiskey has to offer.
