Is Old Overholt 10 Year Rye an Approachable Whiskey?

Old Overholt 10 Year Rye has a bit of a kick to it, but it is backed up by flavor.

While this pour may be a little bit hot for beginners, it carries a ton of flavor that experienced whiskey drinkers will enjoy.

Is Old Overholt 10 Year Rye Complex?

Old Overholt 10 Year Rye has a lot of layers of flavor and complexity.

It starts with a layer of sweet brown sugar and caramel flavors mixed with sweet vanilla and toasted oak from 10 years in a barrel.

The next layer of flavor is a peanut and nutty flavor profile combined with rich rye spices and black pepper.

To be honest, this is a whiskey that you will have to pour 2-3 glasses to truly experience and explore all the flavors in the glass.

Then you have the finish.

My guess is that many will find this whiskey quite hot and with an overpowering finish, but I find it rather enjoyable.

It wakes up your taste buds and delivers a flavor profile that covers the entire spectrum.

Is Old Overholt 10 Year Rye a go-to whiskey?

Old Overholt 10 Year Rye is a bit heavy on the flavor and price tag to be a solid go-to whiskey for me, but I do really enjoy it.

Usually, Old Overholt is a whiskey that I would use in my cocktails because it offers such a strong flavor profile that really shines through int he cocktail, but this bottle is one I would reserve to sip neat and possibly with a little bit of water to smooth out the heat.

At the $95 price point, it’s a bottle that I will keep on the shelf for special occasions and break out the bottle with friends who can appreciate a nice heavy rye whiskey.

Is Old Overholt 10 Year Rye priced accurately to its quality?

Old Overholt 10 Year Rye is packed full of flavor, but the $95 price tag is a little hefty.

I don’t regret purchasing the bottle, but this is a bottle I would prefer to have a $60-70 price tag.

Conclusion for Old Overholt 10 Year Rye

Old Overholt 10 Year Rye is a whiskey that is packed full of flavor and offers some unique flavor notes that you won’t find anywhere else.

The finish is big and bold with some nutty fruit flavors paired with delicious pepper and spice notes that cause your mouth to water and want to pour another glass.

If you’re a fan of rye whiskey, this is a bottle you should probably pick up.

It says it’s a limited release so who knows if they will be producing more 10 year bottles or not – let alone at cask strength.

From the back of the bottle:

“A single year, a single place, in every single drop. In 2012, we laid down rye in our unique Escalator Warehouse V. A decade later we selected the best to be blended and bottled, cask strength, and unfiltered. This Kentucky style rye is the result – spice, depth, and unmistakable Overholt Character.”
