Bottled-In-Bond Requirements

To carry the Bottled-in-Bond designation, this bottled of Old Grand Dad 7 Year whiskey had to follow the 1897 Bottled-in-Bond Act rules:

  • From one distilling season (either Jan–Jun or Jul–Dec).

  • From one distillery.

  • Aged minimum 4 years in a federally bonded warehouse (this one was 7 years).

  • Bottled at 100 proof (50% ABV), no exceptions.

The description from the back of the label is as follows:

"This limited Old Grand-Dad expressions was crafted according to the bottled-in-bond act, a century-old standard requiring a spirit be distilled in a single season by a single distiller and matured for a minimum of 4 years in a government-bonded warehouse. This fine bourbon was distilled in the spring of 2018, carefully aged for 7 years and then cut to 100 proof to further elevate OGD's distinctively classic flavor and boldness."

Is Old Grand Dad 7 Year an Approachable Whiskey?

Old Grand Dad 7 Year is bottled-in-bond which means it is 100 proof.

That being said, it drinks quite well for being 50% ABV.

If you’re used to higher-proof bourbons, you’ll enjoy this one, especially if you like high-rye.

Since it is 100 proof, many beginners to whiskey will think this has a bit of heat to it, so I’d recommend sticking to this one if you’re more familiar with higher proof whiskeys.

Is Old Grand Dad 7 Year Complex?

Old Grand Dad 7 Year has a few layers of complexity and depth of flavor.

It starts out with a massive punch of rich caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, and toasted oak just like you would expect from a traditional bourbon.

After those flavors pass, you’ll taste the high-rye in the mash bill (27% Rye) shine through and you’ll get a lot more of the earthy, rye grain, rye spice flavors that balance quite well with the bourbon corn notes.

The finish is pretty good as well, but it does have a bit of spice on it from the high-rye mash bill.

What are Old Grand Dad 7 Year’s strongest attributes/flavors?

Old Grand Dad 7 Year’s strongest attribute is that it is a 100 proof high-rye bourbon for under $40.

For that price, you get a very full and rich high-rye bourbon that packs a ton of flavor.

Is Old Grand Dad 7 Year a go-to whiskey?

Old Grand Dad is generally a great brand to sip on for a budget price, but it is one of my go-to whiskeys for making old-fashioned cocktails on my camping trips.

Is Old Grand Dad 7 Year priced accurately to its quality?

Old Grand Dad 7 Year is a limited release for 2025 so it is a bit more expensive than some of the other Old Grand Dad options.

With that being said, while I think it is worth the $40 price tag, I probably wouldn’t spend more on this bottle.

It’s priced quite well for a limited release bottle and if you’re looking for a cheaper option, I would go with the Old Grand Dad 114 for $35 that is always on the shelf or possibly even the Old Grand Dad Bottled-In-Bond (Not 7 years aged version) for $20-25.

Conclusion for Old Grand Dad 7 Year Limited Release

Old Grand Dad is a classic brand in bourbon and I like the idea that they are starting to release special bottles and offer a few more varieties to their lineup.

They’re a tried and true budget whiskey that you can’t go wrong with, especially if you are a fan of high-rye bourbons because they offer the nice rye profile with 27% rye in the mash bill.

There aren’t a ton of high-rye bourbons that are quite affordable, so this is a nice bottle if you like high-rye bourbons.

If you’re a fan of the following, you’ll likely enjoy Old Grand Dad 7 Year Bottled-in-Bond:
