Old Fitzgerald 7 Year Tasting Notes

Appearance: Dark Golden Honey

Nose: Honey, caramel, brown sugar, cinnamon, wheat grain, vanilla, toasted oak, light fruits, apricot, light citrus, graham cracker

Palate: Sweet honey and caramel, vanilla, lightly toasted oak, cereal grain, apricot, light fruits, hints of pepper and spice, baking spice, graham cracker (reminds me of a nice vanilla ice cream covered in caramel syrup)

Finish: Full and rich finish – it’s not the longest finish out there, but it is definitely full of flavor and leaves a lasting impression on your taste buds

Is Old Fitzgerald 7 Year an Approachable Whiskey?

Old Fitzgerald 7 Year is a very approachable whiskey.

With it having 20% wheat in the mash bill, the wheat flavors certainly shine through and offer a very nice balance to the rich honey and caramel bourbon flavors.

The finish is full and rich, but not hot at all which make this an excellent choice of whiskey to serve in all occasions.

It kind of reminds me of a nice bowl of vanilla ice cream covered in warm caramel syrup and graham cracker crumbles.

Is Old Fitzgerald 7 Year Complex?

Old Fitzgerald 7 Year is not overly complex, but it has enough depth of flavor and layers that you will keep coming back for more.

It starts out with delicious honey, caramel, and brown sugar flavors you’ll often find in bourbon, but you get even more when those flavors are followed up by cinnamon, toasted oak, vanilla, graham cracker, and cereal grain notes.

It’s quite a nice medley of flavors that work very well together and offer a more refined and delicate blend of wheated bourbon flavors than you’d find in other Heaven Hill products like the Larceny Barrel Proof Bourbons or Bernheim Wheated Bourbon.

I’m a huge fan of the Larceny Barrel Proof offerings (in particular the Larceny Barrel Proof Batch C924), but this Old Fitzgerald 7 Year is definitely a smoother, lighter pour – despite them both having the same Heaven Hill wheated bourbon mashbill.

What are Old Fitzgerald 7 Year’s strongest attributes/flavors?

Old Fitzgerald 7 Year’s strongest attribute is that it is a very delicious and easy to drink wheated bourbon at a manageable price.

If you’re a fan of wheated bourbon’s, you’ll almost definitely enjoy Old Fitzgerald 7 Year.

Is Old Fitzgerald 7 Year a go-to whiskey?

Apparently, Old Fitzgerald 7 Year is supposed to be a new regular release from Heaven Hill so it should start appearing on shelves a lot more often.

If this bottle becomes a regular release, I could easily see it becoming a go-to whiskey if you have the money to purchase $60 bottles on a regular basis.

It’s easy to drink, offers a nice level of flavor, and has a surprisingly nice finish despite being chill filtered.

On my first taste, I was surprised it was chill-filtered because I rather enjoyed the finish on this one.

Is Old Fitzgerald 7 Year priced accurately to its quality?

Old Fitzgerald 7 Year is worth its price tag, but I probably wouldn’t pay any more for it.

I think the $60 price tag stretches what I would pay for it seeing as how the Larceny Barrel Proofs are around $70-75 and offer a much higher ABV and fuller flavor profile.

With that being said though, I don’t think anyone will be disappointed in the $60 price tag on this bottle unless they just aren’t fans of wheated bourbon.

I’ll be curious to see if this becomes a regular shelf-available bottle from Heaven Hill and if it stays at the $60 price point or possibly could even drop to $50.

I think at the $50 price point, this would fly off the shelves and become a go-to whiskey for a lot of people.

Conclusion for Old Fitzgerald 7 Year

Old Fitzgerald 7 Year is an excellent whiskey that offers a well-balanced wheated bourbon flavor profile.

It has a nice sweetness to it that covers the honey, caramel, and brown sugar flavors but also offers a delicious toasted oak, vanilla, and cinnamon flavor profile you often get with traditional bourbon.

The wheat adds cereal grain notes and graham cracker which are two flavors I really enjoy.

Overall, Old Fitzgerald 7 Year is extremely easy to drink and is a whiskey that everyone should enjoy.

If you see it on the shelf, I’d give it a shot and try it out.

As a note, this is my first Old Fitzgerald bottle I’ve found, tasted, and reviewed.

Old Fitzgerald seems like such a rare bottle to find and I’ve seen other bottles go for hundreds of dollars, so it is nice that they are releasing this 7 year as a potential readily available bottle.

After tasting this one, now I might have to start hunting down some of the more rare Old Fitzgerald bottles to see just how good they are!
