What Is A Sour Mash Whiskey?

Before this bottle of whiskey, I had never reviewed a “Sour Mash” whiskey before. So of course, I decided to research this to provide you with the most important facts and information about what a “Sour Mash Whiskey” really is.

Essentially, the used part of the fermented mixture of grain, yeast, and water from a previous batch is used to help create the new batch of whiskey.

Oftentimes, the term “sour mash” gets associated with a type of whiskey, but it refers more to the process in which the whiskey was made.

So what does this mean for Michter’s Sour Mash Whiskey? It means that they used a technique that is used in many different whiskeys and decided to release it as a new bottle variant.

What’s nice about this variant is that the old batches of whiskey that they used were variations of both bourbon and rye which creates a beautiful blend of flavors that you don’t often find.

I’m sure there are a lot more in-depth explanations of what a “sour mash” whiskey is, but my goal is to break down whether this bottle is worth the price tag. So let’s get into the important stuff.

Is Michter’s Sour Mash an Approachable Whiskey?

Michter’s Sour Mash is very easy to drink and has very little heat to it. It’s surprisingly easy to drink and has a combination of flavors that will cater to both bourbon and rye whiskey fans.

Is Michter’s Sour Mash Complex?

Michter’s Sour Mash definitely has some layers of complexity to it. For one, the nose offers both the caramel and oak notes of bourbon paired with the earthy spice notes of a rye whiskey.

It’s honestly a bit difficult to explain the nose because it combines so many flavors that it kind of confuses my brain trying to pick out individual notes.

If that’s not complex, I don’t know what is.

When you take your first sip, you’re likely to experience a very sweet forward honey and caramel note paired with light toasted oak and vanilla. The flavor then pivots into a more earthy, spicy flavor that reminds me more of an apple cinnamon spice mixed with buttery cinnamon toast on sourdough bread.

Is Michter’s Sour Mash a go-to whiskey?

If Micther’s Sour Mash were more readily available in my area it would absolutely be a go-to whiskey. Even though it’s got a $50 price tag, it backs up the price with a ton of flavors.

Is Michter’s Sour Mash priced accurately to its quality?

Michter’s always has a $50 price tag and this bottle is no different. On its own, this bottle easily warrants the $50 price tag. The number of unique flavors it offers is 100% worth the price of entry.

Compared to the other Michter’s offerings, it stands above the rest (at least at this price point). I’m a huge of Michter’s bourbon and rye offerings in general, but this bottle is now my favorite.

Is Michter’s Sour Mash worth the $50 price tag?

Absolutely. Yes, it is.

Conclusion for Michter’s Sour Mash

*Disclaimer: I am not sponsored by Michter’s and I have not and will probably never get a free bottle from this distillery. Please proceed to enjoy my unsponsored opinions after visiting their distillery and bar at Fort Nelson

I was lucky enough to visit Michter’s on my recent Bourbon Trail trip and not only did I have the absolute best cocktail of my life, but we also got to sample some decent whiskey pours.

Michters Distillery - Bourbon Tasting - Secret Whiskey Society

I can honestly say that Michter’s Bar At Fort Nelson was legitimately one of the best bars I have been to. It’s upscale but down to earth and the precision they put into their cocktails was impeccable..

Michters Cocktails - South Point - Best Whiskey Cocktail Ever - Secret Whiskey Society

I first ordered my cocktail and told my friends they had to take a sip. Very quickly after, each of my friends ordered a South Point cocktail for themselves.

The reason I bring up my excellent experience at the Michter’s distillery and bar at Fort Nelson is because after all the whiskeys I tasted on my trip, I think the Michter’s Sour Mash is my favorite of them all.

I highly recommend picking up a bottle of Michter’s Sour Mash if you see one. You can’t be it for the price.

Also, I’d be extremely curious to try the Michter’s Sour Mash Toasted Barrel Finish to see which I prefer most. Unfortunately, in Pennsylvania we have to deal with limited released and it sold out in a matter of seconds so I wasn’t able to secure myself a bottle.

I’ll certainly be keeping an eye out for the next batch and hopefully be able to get myself one so I can review it for you all.
