Is Balvenie 18 Year Pedro Ximénez Cask an Approachable Whisky?

Balvenie 18 Year finished in Pedro Ximénez Casks is incredible smooth and jam-packed full of flavor.

This is absolutely a whisky everyone will enjoy.

It is cask strength (at 98.4 proof) since it was the limited release instead of being the normal 86 proof which gives it a much fuller profile than most Balvenie scotch whisky.

Despite having a higher proof, it is so smooth and full of delicious fruit flavors, I have a hard time believing any fan of whisky would not like this one.

Is Balvenie 18 Year Pedro Ximénez Cask Complex?

This pour of Balvenie 18 Year finished in Pedro Ximénez is one of the best whiskeys I have tasted.

I will admit, Balvenie is my number one favorite distillery so I am a bit biased, but this whisky has nearly no downside to it.

Oftentimes, a whisky will have a bit of a bite or a flavor that just doesn’t mesh well with the overall flavor profile, but this particular bottle got it right.

Every flavor you get is integrated well and actually enhances the others.

You start out with your usual Balvenie fruit flavors of raisin and citrus but then you also get the dark fruit flavors of black cherry, plum, and fig that compound on each other.

Next up you get all the full flavors of being aged in a barrel for 18+ years which adds a delicate balance of toasted oak, tannic spice, pepper, and clove to the mix which is what ties everything together so nicely.

On the finish, the higher proof point and non-chill filtration gives you one of the best finishes I experienced on a Balvenie whisky.

What are Balvenie 18 Year Pedro Ximénez Cask’s strongest attributes/flavors?

It’s hard to quantify what the strongest attribute of this Balvenie 18 Year Pedro Ximénez Cask finish whisky is.

Usually, one quality stands out right away to me and it’s easy to choose a main attribute, but this bottle is just so well balanced that I may have to say that it’s refinement is the best quality.

You get all the best qualities of a Balvenie Scotch whisky being aged for 18 years along with all the best perks of being finished in Pedro Ximénez Casks.

I’m a huge fan of sherry finished whiskeys so this bottle is just perfect for me and hits every checkbox I look for.

Is Balvenie 18 Year Pedro Ximénez Cask a go-to whisky?

If I could find this bottle more often, it would absolutely be a go-to whisky.

However, since this is a limited-release bottle that was only available as a travel retail exclusive it is extremely hard to find so I will be reserving this bottle for special occasions and to share with friends who will appreciate a bottle of this quality.

Is Balvenie 18 Year Pedro Ximénez Cask priced accurately to its quality?

I was able to get this bottle for the $200 MSRP price as a retail travel exclusive on international travel, but otherwise this bottle can go for upwards of $400-500.

If you can find this at MSRP at an airport, it is definitely worth the purchase (I wish I got myself a backup).

At most, I would probably pay $250 for this bottle.

Regardless, the bottle is so good that it is absolutely worth the MSRP if you can find it.

Conclusion for Balvenie 18 Year Pedro Ximénez Cask

This bottle of Balvenie 18 Year finished in Pedro Ximénez is excellent.

If you see it on the shelf, you should absolutely buy it.

Balvenie is one of my favorite distilleries and this bottle is one of the best bottles I have found from their entire lineup.

The unfortunate part is that this bottle is only available as a travel-retail exclusive which means you can only really get it at airports on international flights.

Another issue with international flights is that they usually only let you get 1-2 bottles per flight, so you’re stuck deciding which bottles are most important and “hoping” that you get a good one.

I can say for sure that if you buy the Balvenie 18 Year Pedro Ximénez Cask you will not be disappointed.

For everyone else, I would recommend purchasing the Balvenie 12 Year Single Barrel as a cheap option, Balvenie 21 Year and Balvenie 21 Year Single Barrel as the expensive options.
