Is Balvenie 15 Year Madiera Cask an Approachable Whisky?
Balvenie 15 Year Madeira Cask is one of the most approachable whiskeys I have probably ever tasted.
It has such a nice sweetness paired with rich dark fruits flavors that I cannot imagine anyone would dislike this whisky.
The Madeira finish adds so much rich fruits, nutty hazelnut, and sugary molasses that is almost reminds me of an actual dessert wine – and a quite delicious on at that.
Is Balvenie 15 Year Madiera Cask Complex?
Balvenie 15 Year Madeira Cask is quite complex and has a lot of layers of flavor.
While the most dominant flavors comes from the Madeira Cask finish, I still get a nice amount of the traditional Balvenie flavors that I love.
The nose is full of rich dark fruits right off the bat.
The second you smell this whisky, you’ll get notes of cherry pie, plum, fig, and a ton of sweet molasses and caramel.
On your palate, you get much of the same but with more layers and depth of flavor.
When I took each sip, I got a lot of nutty flavors similar to hazelnut and Amaretto type notes that really reminded me of delicious liqueurs and dessert wines.
In addition, you still have the raisin and fruits notes that you get with your traditional Balvenie whisky.
What are Balvenie 15 Year Madiera Cask’s strongest attributes/flavors?
Balvenie 15 Year Madeira Cask’s strongest attribute is absolutely the amount of the flavor the Madeira finish adds to this whiskey.
Right away, everyone will appreciate the dessert flavors – dark cherry and hazelnut especially.
Is Balvenie 15 Year Madiera Cask a go-to whisky?
If I could find this whisky anywhere other than airports, I would absolutely be having a bottle of this at my house at all times.
Unfortunately, this bottle is a travel retail exclusive which means you can only buy it on international flights in airports and cruises.
If you see it in an airport, I would definitely pick one up.
Is Balvenie 15 Year Madiera Cask priced accurately to its quality?
$140 for a bottle of whisky is usually pretty expensive, but when it comes to Scotches, even the entry level bottles like the Balvenie 12 Doublewood, Laphroaig 10 Year, and Glenlivet 15 Year will run you $80-100.
In comparison, $140 for this bottle of Balvenie 15 year Madeira Cask is an absolute steal.
On top of the lovely traditional Balvenie flavors, you get such rich dark fruits and nutty flavors that make for one of the best dessert whiskeys I have ever tasted.
If you see this bottle for MSRP you should definitely pick it up.
On secondary markets, I have seen this bottle going for upwards of $400-500 which is absolutely too much.
Bottom line, if you find this bottle for less than $200 it is worth the purchase.
Conclusion for Balvenie 15 Year Madiera Cask
Balvenie is my number one favorite whisky distillery and for them to release a limited release bottle like this is quite a treat.
I wish I could purchase the bottle more easily, but it’s only available in airports for travel retail which means I will have to take another international trip to buy myself a backup bottle or two!
This one is absolutely worth the purchase and if you see it in the store, you should absolutely pick it up.
