Southern Tier Distilling and Brewery

I’ve always been a fan of Southern Tier Brewery and their beer.

Southern Tier 2XIPA is a great go-to beer and I have had quite a few of Southern Tier’s flavored beers like Pumpking, The Warlock, and my favorite – Southern Tier White Chocolate Raspberry dessert stout.

So when I heard that they made whiskeys, I was certainly curious.

These bottles came from my cousin who visited the distillery and has tasted quite a few Southern Tier beers with me at our local Pittsburgh beer festivals, so he decided to buy them and taste them during our weekly D&D session.

To our surprise, they were quite delicious and really do taste like what they advertise.

The Southern Tier distillery is relatively new.

It officially opened in 2016 in Lakewood, New York just down the road from the original Southern Tier Brewing Company which was founded in 2002.

They made a traditional whiskey which I have not tasted yet, but I’ll be on the look out for that one if I can find it.

To be honest, I’m kind of shocked they even had a distillery that I didn’t know about.

But with that, let’s get into the review.

Is Southern Tier Peanut Butter Whiskey an Approachable Whiskey?

So this whiskey is not something I would sip on straight.

While it does have a nice peanut brittle buttery flavor to it, it doesn’t really remind me of an actual peanut butter cup like some other flavored whiskeys like the Ballotin Peanut Butter Chocolate Whiskey.

The Ballotin Peanut Butter Whiskey tastes almost exactly like a peanut butter cup whereas this bottle tastes a little more on the sweeter sugary side.

This is a bottle that I would use as an ingredient in an old fashioned to give it a little bit of a sweeter peanut butter/peanut brittle flavor.

It also has a nice buttery flavor to it that is quite nice, but it’s a bit too much for me to sip neat.

Granted, it’s likely meant to be mixed, but I can’t help but initially tasting everything neat to get a true flavor test.

Is Southern Tier Peanut Butter Whiskey Complex?

This bottle is a little less complex than I had hoped for.

I have had a few other Peanut Butter whiskeys and this one just doesn’t give me the actual peanut butter flavor that I expected.

As mentioned earlier, it’s more of a peanut brittle/sugar candy flavor.

Is Southern Tier Peanut Butter Whiskey priced accurately to its quality?

I don’t know if I would pay $25 for this bottle since the Southern Tier S’Mores Whiskey is so much more impressive.

If I had to decide between the two, the S’Mores would win hands down (it smelled and tasted almost identical to a real s’mores I would make sitting around the camp fire).

With that being said, it’s only $25 which is pretty affordable and if you’re using it as a cocktail ingredient for a twist on an old fashioned or another cocktail, it’s not a bad price.

Conclusion for Southern Tier Peanut Butter Whiskey

Before my cousin found these bottles at the Southern Tier distillery, I didn’t even know they made whiskey at all.

Of the three bottles he brought for us to try (and thankfully let me bring them home to review) this bottle was my least favorite.

The other two were the Southern Tier S’Mores Whiskey and the Southern Tier Cherry Chocolate Old Fashioned.

The S’Mores whiskey was hands down my favorite and I was actually blown away by how it smelled and tasted just like a real s’more.

If you’re looking for a whiskey that truly tasted like a peanut butter cup, I’d probably recommend you look into the Ballotin Peanut Butter Chocolate Whiskey.
