Southern Tier S'Mores Whiskey Tasting Notes

Appearance: Dark Golden Honey

Nose: Smells exactly like s’mores which is quite impressive. Tons of graham cracker, marshmallow sweetness, chocolate – just imagine making a smore and smelling it before roasting it on an open fire

Palate: Bold graham cracker, chocolate, vanilla, marshmallow sweetness, a bit of spice, whiskey heat, caramel, sugar

Finish: A bit of heat on the finish like you’d get with any 35% whiskey – leaves you with rich sweet flavors and a decent spice, chocolate, and graham cracker

Southern Tier Distilling and Brewery

I’ve always been a fan of Southern Tier Brewery and their beer.

Southern Tier 2XIPA is a great go-to beer and I have had quite a few of Southern Tier’s flavored beers like Pumpking, The Warlock, and my favorite – Southern Tier White Chocolate Raspberry dessert stout.

So when I heard that they made whiskeys, I was certainly curious.

These bottles came from my cousin who visited the distillery and has tasted quite a few Southern Tier beers with me at our local Pittsburgh beer festivals, so he decided to buy them and taste them during our weekly D&D session.

To our surprise, they were quite delicious and really do taste like what they advertise.

The Southern Tier distillery is relatively new.

It officially opened in 2016 in Lakewood, New York just down the road from the original Southern Tier Brewing Company which was founded in 2002.

They made a traditional whiskey which I have not tasted yet, but I’ll be on the look out for that one if I can find it.

To be honest, I’m kind of shocked they even had a distillery that I didn’t know about.

But with that, let’s get into the review.

Is Southern Tier S'Mores Whiskey an Approachable Whiskey?

So of course, this Southern Tier S’Mores Whiskey wouldn’t really qualify as an officially whiskey for me since it is less than 40% ABV and contains significant flavoring.

With that being said, it is quite easy to drink and truly does offer exactly what it advertises – S’more flavors on top of a high-corn bourbon base.

This would be an excellent bottle to take to parties, camping trips, and anywhere you’d be looking to add a bit of chocolate s’more flavors to a cocktail recipe.

Is Southern Tier S'Mores Whiskey Complex?

This question is usually in my review template because I like to judge the layers of complexity and break down exactly what I’m tasting in my whiskeys.

In this bottle, I still want to include it because there is a lot of interesting complexity going on in this pour.

To start, the nose smells EXACTLY like a real s’more I would make in the kitchen.

I’m not exactly sure how they get so much graham cracker flavor into this, but it is bold and prominent – especially on the nose.

On the palate, you get a bit more of the alcohol flavors that you would expect from a young whiskey like a bit of spice and heat, caramel, and vanilla but you do still get all the s’more flavors on the palate just like the nose.

The finish you can certainly feel the alcohol heat and I would assume that most people would either take this as shots or use it in cocktails, but to be honest… I could see some people sipping on this as well.

What are Southern Tier S'Mores Whiskey’s strongest attributes/flavors?

Southern Tier S’Mores Whiskey’s strongest attribute is absolutely how they got the whiskey to smell exactly like a real s’mores snack.

I’m quite impressed and did not expect it to be so accurate, but they somehow figured it out.

As mentioned earlier, Southern Tier has always been an expert at creating deliciously flavored beers so it doesn’t surprise me that they are able to do the same with whiskey.

My guess is that they may have casks full of stouts or other beers that impart some of these roasted chocolate flavors that help with the flavor profile.

Either way, it’s quite fascinating and I’d love to visit their distillery to learn more.

Is Southern Tier S'Mores Whiskey a go-to whiskey?

So I’m not generally a huge flavored whiskey type of guy, but I could see myself buying this for camping trips just for the novelty of surprising people with a cocktail or shot that tastes just like the s’mores that they are roasting on the camp fire.

It’s not something I would drink regularly, but if I were serving cocktails or old fashioneds at parties, this is an ingredient I would consider adding as a nice dessert twist after a dinner.

Is Southern Tier S'Mores Whiskey priced accurately to its quality?

This bottle only costs $25 and I think it delivers on that price tag.

While not quite as strong as a regular whiskey, it is pretty dang close and offers such a unique flavor that I think everyone would appreciate what they’ve done with this bottle.

Conclusion for Southern Tier S'Mores Whiskey

Southern Tier S’Mores Whiskey is quite the surprising bottle.

It says it is S’mores and it 100% is S’mores.

There’s nothing more to be said than that other than that I want to learn more about how they get such a precise flavor layered on top of their whiskey base.

If you enjoy camping and cooking s’mores around the camp fire, you’ll definitely want to try this whiskey if you find a bottle.

It’s a novelty bottle to many since it is a flavored whiskey, but it does what it says it will and that is a pleasant surprise.
