Nose: Corn, malt, caramel, vanilla, toasted oak, rye spice, brown sugar, light fruit
Palate: Sweet caramel, oak, rye spice, black pepper, citrus notes
Finish: Medium finish with a light amount of heat and spice – leaves you with heavy oak and rye spice with lingering black pepper
Is Smooth Ambler Contradiction an Approachable Whiskey?
Smooth Ambler has a bit of pepper and spice from the 20% rye mash bill, but it’s a rather enjoyable balance of sweet and spicy.
Whiskey beginners will probably find this one a little strong, but it has a nice flavor profile if you’re a fan of rye whiskey.
Is Smooth Ambler Contradiction Complex?
Smooth Ambler Contradiction has a few layers of flavor.
It starts with your usual bourbon flavors of caramel, oak, and vanilla.
But what’s unique about this bottle is the amount of rye spice and pepper notes that really add to the flavor profile.
Oddly enough, I don’t get nearly the malt flavor on the palate as I did on the nose.

Smooth Ambler Contradiction’s strongest attribute is that it balances pretty well between sweet and spicy with 20% corn and 20% malted barley.
Even though I got a strong amount of malt on the nose, you don’t really get it on the palate so the rye shines through.

Smooth Ambler Contradiction could be a go-to whiskey if you are a fan of bourbons with a bit of spice to them.
Is Smooth Ambler Contradiction priced accurately to its quality?
Smooth Ambler Contradiction is priced right around where I would have expected and delivers on its price tag.

I enjoyed this pour of Smooth Ambler Contradiction and think it has a nice flavor profile.
With that being said, there are a few other bottles on the market that I think may have a one-up on this bottle like New Riff Single Barrel Bourbon and Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Select.
