Is Ezra Brooks Cask Strength an Approachable Whiskey?

Ezra Brooks Cask Strength packs quite a punch.

It’s definitely not a whiskey for beginners.

Is Ezra Brooks Cask Strength Complex?

Ezra Brooks Cask Strength has a few layers of flavors, but it is kind of overpowered by charcoal mellowing.

I really get the metallic charcoal notes in every sip. While this isn’t particularly a bad thing and certainly adds to the flavor profile, I would prefer to get a little more of the caramel, oak, and vanilla shining through.

What are Ezra Brooks Cask Strength’s strongest attributes/flavors?

Ezra Brooks Cask Strength really emphasizes the charcoal mellowing process. Since this is a cask-strength bottle, it hides no flavors and you really get the single barrel flavors on each sip.

My favorite aspect of this pour is that it has a nice long finish that really coats your entire mouth with a nice oily mouthfeel.

Is Ezra Brooks Cask Strength a go-to whiskey?

The amount of heat on this 120-proof bottle would not allow me to relax and enjoy each pour as a go-to whiskey. I rarely add water to a whiskey, but this is a bottle that I would probably try on to see if it eliminates a bit of the metallic charcoal mellowing flavors and reduce the heat a bit.

*Edit: I did decide to add a few drops of water to this one and it helped a lot.

On the nose, it helped reduce the metallic notes and allowed me to get a bit more of the sweeter caramel and baking spice notes. I even get a bit of citrus and light fruits now.

On the palate, it slightly reduced the charcoal notes, but not enough to really make a difference.

Is Ezra Brooks Cask Strength priced accurately to its quality?

Ezra Brooks Cask Strength has a nice mouthfeel and boldness to it, but I much prefer the Ezra Brooks Distiller’s Collection which is the same price.

Conclusion for Ezra Brooks Cask Strength

While I do appreciate and enjoy this bottle of Ezra Brooks Cask Strength, I think there are better bottles you can purchase at the same price point like New Riff Single Barrel Bourbon and Old Forester 1910.
