Wigle Straight Rye Tasting Notes
Nose: Herbal, tart candy, fruit, very grain forward, mint, reminds me of the smell after I weed whack my yard. It also has an odd rubber-band smell to it
Palate: Caramel, honey, and light oak followed by similar herbal and earthy garden notes. I get a rubber/rubberband flavor to this and cannot quite pinpoint exactly what it is.
Finish: Medium finish with a little bit of heat – starts with a bit of caramel and oak and finishes with black pepper and herbal grassy flavors
Is Wigle Straight Rye an Approachable Whiskey?
Wigle Straight Rye is fairly easy to drink and goes down pretty smoothly.
Is Wigle Straight Rye Complex?
Wigle Straight Rye has a few layers of flavors, but they’re an odd combination.
It starts with the nose having a lot of herbal and grassy garden notes with a strong mint flavor. It truly reminds me of when I weed whack an entire area of weeds in my yard and you pick them all up with your gloves. This whiskey smells like the flavor that is left over after that.
Once you take a sip, you get a bit of caramel and oak upfront, but the herbal and earthy grassy notes follow up and finish with a bit of pepper spiciness.
Is Wigle Straight Rye a go-to whiskey?
Wigle Straight Rye isn’t really my favorite rye whiskey, so this would not be a go-to whiskey for me.
Is Wigle Straight Rye priced accurately to its quality?
Wigle Straight Rye is a Pennsylvania-made whiskey that is right in my backyard in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I would be a lot happier with this bottle had it cost $30-40, but at the $60 price point, it is quite expensive even though it is local.
Conclusion for Wigle Straight Rye
Wigle Straight Rye Whiskey isn’t for me. It has an odd flavor profile that my taste buds and nose just don’t jive well with.
That being said, it does have a unique blend of flavors that are quite floral and herbal.
It also drinks very smoothly and is pretty easy to drink.
If you’re looking to support smaller Pennsylvania distilleries you could purchase a bottle or visit their distillery. Maybe I would appreciate the flavors a bit more if I knew what went into making it because it is truly unlike any Rye whiskey I’ve ever had before.
