Old Grand Dad 114 Proof is a heavy hitter. It comes right out of the gate with big and bold flavors of rye spice and pepper. While I enjoy the flavors, the proof can get in the way. I would not recommend this whiskey to beginners.
Is Old Grand Dad 114 Proof Complex?
Old Grand Dad 114 Proof has a few layers to it. You can certainly tell this bourbon has a high amount of rye in it. You’ll get a blast of pepper and rye spice with each sip, but then it also has nice caramel and oak notes that round it out if you can get past the spicy heat.
You then get a decent finish where the flavors all blend together and you’re left with a big and bold flavor that lasts a while until it tapers off and leaves you with a cinnamon spice at the end.

Old Grand Dad 114 Proof’s strongest attribute is most certainly its level of spice. It’s 114 proof so it already has a lot of heat, but the extra Rye in this bourbon really doubles down on the spice level.
Is Old Grand Dad 114 Proof a go-to whisky?
Old Grand Dad 114 Proof isn’t a whiskey I would be drinking daily. There are plenty of other bottles at the same price point that I would purchase over this one. However, the bold flavors and spice of this bottle are excellent as a cocktail mixer and the pepper and spice flavors really come through.
Is Old Grand Dad 114 Proof priced accurately to its quality?
Old Grand Dad 114 Proof delivers a bit under its price point for me. While I enjoy some of the flavors this pour is offering, there are better bottles you can find for the same price point like Elijah Craig, Four Roses, and Old Forester.
The heat on this bottle is a bit much for me to sip on neat, but this would be an excellent bottle for mixing cocktails. The high proof and exceptionally bold pepper and rye spice flavors of this bottle make for an excellent old-fashioned and manhattan.

Old Grand Dad 114 Proof is a decent bang for your buck if you like big and bold whiskeys. It’ll certainly get the job done quickly if you can handle the heat.
