Is Old Elk Double Wheat an Approachable Whiskey?
Old Elk Double Wheat has a bit of a kick to it but in a good way.
It has a nice, lovely finish that leaves you with a lot of excellent flavors and lingers in your mouth for a long time.
Beginners to whiskey may feel this one is a little strong at first, but the flavors will likely grow on them.
Is Old Elk Double Wheat Complex?
Old Elk Double Wheat has a few layers of flavors.
It starts with a beautiful nose that reminds me of buttery brown sugar and cinnamon toast. It also has a bit of a sweet vanilla note that reminds me of a nice cinnamon roll with cream frosting on top.
Once it hits your palate, you get a nice kick of spice that I wasn’t expecting.
The palate also has nice buttery brown sugar and cinnamon flavors but also has light fruit flavors that remind me of a spiced apple crisp dessert.
The pour finishes out with a bit of rye spice and pepper notes on the tail end and leaves you with a very rich mouthfeel that sticks around for a good 30-60 seconds.
Is Old Elk Double Wheat a go-to whiskey?
Old Elk Double Wheat is an excellent whiskey.
At the $100 price tag, I don’t know if this would be a go-to whiskey for me. It’s more a whiskey I would save for a special occasion when I’m in the mood for a nice spicy treat.
Is Old Elk Double Wheat priced accurately to its quality?
Old Elk Double Wheat offers a lot of great flavors and I really enjoy it, but I feel it would be a better fit around the $50-60 price range.
While there aren’t a ton of whiskeys on the market similar to this, if I were going to spend $100+ on an American whiskey, I would go for the Old Elk Cigar Cut over this one.
Conclusion for Old Elk Double Wheat Straight Whiskey
I really enjoy this bottle of Old Elk Double Wheat Straight Whiskey.
Since it is a blend of a Wheated Bourbon and a straight wheat whiskey, you get a unique flavor profile that really accentuates the wheat grain mash bill and centers the flavor profile a little closer to the baked bread and pastry flavor profile.
It works well and has a very delicate balance between the sweet brown sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, and oak flavors with the spice and pepper notes.
