Laphroaig Lore Tasting Notes
Appearance: Dark Amber
Nose: Peat, smoke, tar, ash, mint, brown sugar, vanilla, oak, salty brine, rich spices
Palate: Smoothly balanced peat and smoke, oak, salt, brine, cocoa nibs, pepper and spice
Finish: Smooth and easy finish – one of the easiest I’ve had with a smokey and peaty Scotch – leaves you with a nice oily and buttery mouthfeel full of smoke, peat, oak, and vanilla and a layer of salty brininess that finishes out with a subtle cocoa note and a blend of spices and pepper on the tail end
Is Laphroaig Lore an Approachable Whisky?
Laphroaig Lore is one of the most approachable smokey and peaty whiskeys I have found.
People either love or hate peaty Scotch whisky and if you are a fan, this bottle of Laphroaig Lore will be a top Scotch for you.
If you aren’t a fan of peaty Scotch whisky, this bottle may be the one to help convert you.
It’s very smooth, has a nice balance of peat and smoke which isn’t too overwhelming, and is mellowed out by excellent sweet and savory notes.
Is Laphroaig Lore Complex?
Laphroaig Lore is extremely complex and has many layers of flavor.
Aside from the Laphroaig trademark smoke and peaty flavors, this pour adds so many additional layers of flavor that give it some real depth.
The most significant is how the smoke and peat are backed up by a savory salt and briny element that gives this whisky an almost dessert quality.
On top of that, it is full of rich spices, black pepper notes, and even a bit of bittersweet cocoa nib flavors that add to the dessert aspect of this pour.
What are Laphroaig Lore’s strongest attributes/flavors?
Laphroaig Lore’s strongest attribute is definitely the balance of peat and smoke with savory salty and sweet notes.
The pour is just brilliantly balanced and brings you all of the flavors you could want in a classic Islay Scotch whisky.
Is Laphroaig Lore a go-to whisky?
Laphroaig Lore is one of my normal go-to whiskies.
I generally will sip on Laphroaig Lore in the following situations:
- When camping
- Cold winter Nights with my fireplace lit
- With steak dinners or burgers on the grill
Laphroaig Lore is in my top 3 Scotch Whiskies and is a bottle that I go to when I’m looking for a nice peaty Scotch.
I actually just took this whisky with me on a camping trip this past weekend which spurred me to write this review.
My good friend Andy who wrote our Big Peat Review got me a Jacob Bromwell flask (reviewed by Chuck) and I filled it with Laphroaig Lore and really enjoyed it while sitting around the campfire with friends this weekend.
Is Laphroaig Lore priced accurately to its quality?
I was able to purchase these bottles of Laphroaig Lore for $99 each which seemed cheaper than I’ve been able to find them in the past.
At the $99 price point, Laphroaig Lore is an absolute steal and I bought myself 4 bottles.
If you can find a bottle of this for less than $120, I’d recommend stocking up because it’s going to be one of the best peaty Scotches you can find at that price point.
Conclusion for Laphroaig Lore
I’ve always been a fan of Laphroaig and Laphroaig Lore is the best of the best without getting into much pricier bottles.
At $99, this is a bottle that I can solidly recommend to everyone who is a fan of smokey or peaty Scotch Whisky.
If you see this bottle on the shelf, definitely buy yourself one (or four).
