Is Jack Daniel’s Twice Barreled an Approachable Whiskey?
Jack Daniel’s Twice Barreled is a pretty heavy whiskey. At 53.35% ABV, you’ll certainly sense the heat on the nose and the palate. This isn’t a whiskey I’d be sharing with beginners to whiskey because of both the heat and the rarity of the bottle.
Is Jack Daniel’s Twice Barreled Complex?
Jack Daniel’s Twice Barreled has a lot of layers of flavor. This bottle is 100% Malted Barley instead of a normal 51% corn or more with bourbon, so you’ll get a much less sweet flavor than your standard Jack Daniel’s products.
Instead, you get more of a chalky graham cracker texture and flavor to it. On top of that, you have the oloroso sherry cask finish which gives nice chocolate, dark fruit, cherry, and plum notes.
Since this bottle also has the classic charcoal mellowing, you get the toasted charred marshmallow notes that pair well with the malted graham cracker.
It’s got a solid finish that leaves you with a light bit of pepper and oaky tannic spice on the palate.
What are Jack Daniel’s Twice Barreled’s strongest attributes/flavors?
The most unique thing about Jack Daniel’s Twice Barreled is that it is a 100% Malted Barley Whiskey. This gives it a completely unique flavor from what you’ll normally get with Jack Daniel’s or your standard bourbons.
On top of that, you get all the oloroso sherry cask finish which adds the cherry, chocolate, and plum notes on top of the malt.
Is Jack Daniel’s Twice Barreled a go-to whisky?
Jack Daniel’s Twice Barreled is a very rare bottle, but it also costs nearly $200 on the secondary market. It is definitely a bottle for special occasions and to share with other experienced whiskey drinkers.
Is Jack Daniel’s Twice Barreled priced accurately to its quality?
If you can find Jack Daniel’s Twice Barreled at MSRP of $70, it is worth the price. It gives you a much different flavor profile than your usual Jack Daniel’s and it is a nice to see Jack Daniel’s experimenting with American Single Malts.
However, I don’t think I’d be buying this one on the secondary market. There is a lot better whiskey I could find for $200+.
Conclusion for Jack Daniel’s Twice Barreled
I’m very happy that I was able to get a bottle of Jack Daniel’s Twice Barreled – 2022 Limited Special Release.
I had to track the bottle on my local liquor store website for two months as it said “Coming Soon” for ages, then they added a photo, then the description, and gave us little to no clue when it was actually dropping.
I managed to drive 35 minutes to a store that had it and I was able to pick up the last bottle available.
After having two glasses and letting it open up a bit, I can appreciate the flavors that the bottle delivers.
But overall, I think I may still prefer my bottle of Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel – Barrel Proof.
Even though this bottle is over 100 proof, I don’t get the same non-chill filtered oily and buttery mouthfeel or as deep flavors.
For this being Jack Daniel’s first attempt at a 100% American Single Malt, it’s a nice start in the direction, but it doesn’t quite deliver as much as I would have expected from all the hype.
Don’t get me wrong, if you can find this bottle at $70 I would absolutely buy it.
At the $400 price point, only buy this if you’re an expert whiskey drinker looking for a unique bottle to share with other good whiskey friends.
