Jack Daniel's Blackberry Tasting Notes

Appearance: Dark Golden Amber

Nose: Blackberry Iced Tea, Bonker’s Candy, sweet gummy candies

Palate: Definitely blackberry flavor, vanilla, slight hint of oak and Jack Daniel’s classic charcoal mellowing

Finish: Relatively smooth and easy finish but it does have a bit of a Robitussin or cough syrup quality to it

Is Jack Daniel's Blackberry an Approachable Whiskey Liqueur?

Jack Daniel’s Blackberry is not an actual whiskey.

It is made from the base Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7 which is charcoal mellowed like all other Jack Daniel’s whiskeys.

It is then blended with a blackberry liqueur.

I am not sure whether real blackberry’s are used to infuse the liqueur with flavor, but it tasted too sweet for me to think that is the case.

My guess is this is either blackberry or blackberry concentrate that is sugared and sweetened which makes this bottle much more like a liqueur than a whiskey.

That being said, it is fairly easy to drink, but I don’t see many people drinking this liqueur neat or on the rocks.

As with some of the other Jack Daniel’s flavored liqueurs like Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey, I see this being added to cocktails or even to add a little kick to a lemonade or tea.

Right away when I smelled it, I immediately thought of tea as the perfect compliment to this liqueur, but lemonade would also be a good choice.

Update: After my initial review, I purchased both Turner’s Lemonade and Turner’s Iced Tea to see how this tasted with it and both were a nice mix. The only thing I was surprised about was that the Jack Daniel’s Blackberry didn’t dominate the flavor. I had to pour a decent amount to balance the whiskey against the tea and lemonade flavors – which I guess is a good thing. When I made mine, I used about 1 oz Jack Daniel’s Blackberry to 6 oz lemonade or iced tea.

Is Jack Daniel's Blackberry Complex?

Jack Daniel’s Blackberry isn’t particularly complex.

I wish I got a little more of the Jack Daniel’s flavor shining through, but the sweet blackberry dominates the flavor profile.

It does get a bit of vanilla, caramel sweetness, oak, and charcoal mellowing that sneak through to your taste buds, but unless you really know Jack Daniel’s you won’t really notice it.

The finish is actually fairly nice on this.

I’ve tasted many other flavored liqueurs and most are quite thin and the flavors don’t linger long after you finish the sip.

This sticks around for a little while and gives you a bit of an oaky tannic sensation along with a lasting blackberry note.

What are Jack Daniel's Blackberry’s strongest attributes/flavors?

Jack Daniel’s Blackberry is designed for one thing and that it to make your cocktails, lemonade, and iced tea taste good while adding a decent boost of alcohol.

This liqueur is 35% ABV which is just 5% lower than the traditional Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7, so if you add it to a drink it’ll certainly get the job done with nearly no negative effects that would make the drink taste bad.

Which is better: Jack Daniel's Blackberry or Crown Royal Blackberry?

I know there is a lot of hype around all the Crown Royal blackberry and Jack Daniel’s wanted to throw their hat in the ring with this one.

I pulled out my bottle of Crown Royal Blackberry to compare side by side with Jack Daniel’s Blackberry for this review and my choice is a pretty decisive one.

Since I review all of my whiskeys neat in a Glencairn, I would absolutely prefer to drink Jack Daniel’s Blackberry neat over Crown Royal Blackberry.

Granted, I probably wouldn’t be drinking either of this outside of a cocktail but if I had to, I think the Jack Daniel’s Blackberry has a much better structure of whiskey as it’s backbone.

Tasting them both side by side, I do feel like Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7 has more influence on their bottle than Crown Royal’s.

I wish I had some lemonade on hand to see which tastes better, but I will have to update my review if I give that a try.

Overall, I would hand the win to Jack Daniel’s Blackberry.

Is Jack Daniel's Blackberry priced accurately to its quality?

Jack Daniel’s Blackberry costs $27 and I feel like that is about the price range it should be.

I’d maybe feel a little better at the $20 price, but I don’t feel ripped off at $27.

If you’re having a party and want shots that everyone will be able to enjoy, this is a great bottle for that.

I will have to consult with my friend Cocktail Mixologist buddy Stevie P of Liquid Flair Entertainment on this one to see what kind of delicious cocktails he could cook up with this bottle.

I just know he’ll be able to turn this into an amazing cocktail and if he does, I’ll post it here on the site.

Conclusion for Jack Daniel's Blackberry

Overall, this bottle is about what you would expect.

It’s not really a whiskey, but it does have the backbone of Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7 which I didn’t realize shined through at first until I tasted it against the Crown Royal Blackberry.

It’ll be great to use in cocktails, especially lemonades and iced teas, which could be a nice addition to a summer pool party.

It’s not something I would drink myself regularly, but it does deliver on exactly what it advertises.
