Daviess County Bourbon Review - Cabernet Sauvignon Finish - Secret Whiskey Society - Featured Square

I first had Daviess County when I attended the Pittsburgh Whiskey Festival. I took my dad who is a huge fan of wine but doesn’t know a ton about whiskey. He was learning and experiencing the variety of whiskeys ranging from the pricey Dalmore Cigar Malt and Balvenie 21-Year Port Wood and we worked down the price ranges to Glenlivet 15-year which is finished in French Oak Casks, Bib and Tucker, and Redemption.

After tasting quite a few whiskeys, the Glenlivet 15-year really stood out and likely because of the sweeter French wine finish. So later on in the show, I saw this Daviess County Cabernet Finish and decided to give it a taste.

I’m going to do a much more thorough review now when I have more time with the glass, but these are my thoughts on the Daviess County Cabernet Finish.

Is Daviess County Cabernet Finish an Approachable Whiskey?

Daviess County Cabernet Finish is a whiskey that I would probably only share with experienced whiskey drinkers. The nose has a bit of heat to it and so does the finish. I would imagine that beginners to whiskey may be a bit turned off by this one.

Is Daviess County Cabernet Finish Complex?

Daviess County isn’t particularly complex, but it does have some standout notes from the Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon finish.

The initial flavors are what you would expect from a traditional bourbon – caramel, oak, and vanilla but then it is followed up with some dark fruit notes like cherry and plum that do add a nice level of sweetness to the whiskey.

I enjoy this extra layer and find the sweetness to be a nice addition. It almost reminds me of a Dalmore 12 Year which has the sherry notes that boost up the sweetness.

Is Daviess County Cabernet Finish a go-to whiskey?

Daviess County Cabernet Finish is a whiskey I would share on a special occasion. At the $45 price point, I’d certainly be drinking a more affordable bourbon as my daily sipper, but Daviess County Cabernet Finish would be a perfect bottle for a dinner party where you are having guests who enjoy and appreciate wine and whiskey.

Is Daviess County Cabernet Finish priced accurately to its quality?

I’m happy with my purchase of Daviess County Cabernet Finish at the $45 price point. However, I do think this bottle would be more accurately priced if it were $30-35.

Conclusion for Daviess County Cabernet Finish

Daviess County Cabernet Finish offers a unique dark fruit sweetness to a blend of wheat and rye bourbon mash bills. If you’re a wine drinker and looking for a nice twist to your bottle of bourbon, I recommend giving this one a shot.
