Nose: Dark Fruits, cherries, plums, raisins, a hint of citrus zest, vanilla, light oak, nuts, anise seed, allspice
Palate: Candied fruits, cherry, almond, oak, earthy pepper and tobacco notes
Finish: Medium finish with a bit of heat – leaves you with dark fruit flavors like black cherry and plum and finishes with a lingering pepper spice
Is Dalmore Port Wood an Approachable Whisky?
Dalmore Port Wood has a 46% ABV versus your standard Dalmore 12 Year’s 40%, so this one has a bit of heat on the finish.
Since it is a pricier bottle and has a bit of heat, this isn’t a bottle I’d pour for beginner whiskey drinkers.
Is Dalmore Port Wood Complex?
Dalmore Port Wood has a few layers of flavors to it.
The nose is lovely. It has your dark fruits, cherries, and plums, but also a nice hint of citrus zest. I also get a lot of baking spices, nutty notes, anise seeds, and allspice.
Unfortunately, I don’t get all the complexity in the flavor as I do on the nose, but the flavors are still quite enjoyable.
You still get all the dark fruit flavors, but it starts with a bit more of an earthy flavor than you’d get with the Dalmore 12-Year or Sherry Cask. It’s a bit more peppery and tobacco on the palate with a bit of nutty, almond-like flavors.
The medium finish leaves you with a bit of heat with flavors of dark fruit and a lingering pepper spice
What are Dalmore Port Wood’s strongest attributes/flavors?
Dalmore Port Wood’s strongest attribute would be its beautiful nose. It smells absolutely amazing.
The Tawny Port Pipes really add an earthy, nutty element to the flavor profile.
Is Dalmore Port Wood a go-to whisky?
Dalmore Port Wood is a little pricey to be a go-to whisky. If you are looking for a nice daily sipper, I would go with the standard Dalmore 12-Year.
Is Dalmore Port Wood priced accurately to its quality?
The Dalmore Port Wood is priced a little high for its quality.
For $20 cheaper, you can get the Dalmore Sherry Cask which offers a smoother pour and a better blend of flavors. Although, I may be biased because I’m a sucker for Sherry Cask finishes.
Conclusion for Dalmore Port Wood
Dalmore Port Wood is a very tasty whisky.
While it’s not my favorite of the Dalmore lineup, the quality is always very high when you get a bottle of Dalmore Whisky and I am not disappointed in the purchase.
Would I buy this bottle again? Probably not. I’d choose the Dalmore Sherry Cask over this every time.
