Barrell Seagrass Tasting Notes

Nose: Toffee, tropical fruits, apricot, pineapple, vanilla, molasses, raw sugar cane, elderflower notes similar to St. Germaine liqueur

Palate: Candied apricot and dark fruits – like rich fruit gummy candies. After the initial sweet candied fruit notes, you get a lovely blend of vanilla, toffee, and oak that finishes out with a light but noticeable rye spice finish

Finish: Medium finish that leaves you with a very nice mouthfeel without a ton of heat – especially since it is nearly 60% ABV. After the candied fruit notes subside, you’re left with a very unique flavor profile of rye spice, white pepper, a bit of clove, and oak.

Is Barrell Seagrass an Approachable Whiskey?

Barrell Seagrass is a little high on the ABV coming in at nearly 60% so it’s for experienced whiskey drinkers. It may prove a little too bold for beginners.

Is Barrell Seagrass Complex?

Barrell Seagrass has a lot of layers of flavor.

Being a blend of American and Canadian Rye Whiskey, you get a completely different profile than you would normally get with American Ryes.

On top of that, this bottle is finished in Martinique Rum barrels, Madeira Casks, and Apricot Brandy barrels.

And let me tell you, all of those flavors really do come through on this pour.

On first sip, you’re met with a flavor blast of fruit.

It took me a while to pinpoint what I was tasting because initially, I just felt like I was tasting extremely rich and delicious fruit gummy candies. I’ve always been a fan of gummy candies so this caught me off guard a little bit.

The last whiskey I had that had such strong tropical fruit flavors was when I tried Rampur Double Cask Whiskey from India.

After breaking down what I was tasting, it makes sense.

The boldest flavor I tasted coming through was the candied apricot and tropical fruit. This comes from the whiskey being finished in Apricot brandy barrels and Madeira casks.

On top of that, you have the sweet sugar cane notes from being finished in Martinique Rum barrels.

And to finish out the flavor profile, you’ve got your traditional rye spice and pepper notes which leaves you with a nice spicy finish on the tail end.

What are Barrell Seagrass’ strongest attributes/flavors?

Barrell Seagrass’ strongest attribute is definitely the unique candied fruit notes you get with each sip.

Every time I take another sip, I find new flavors that I enjoy.

Is Barrell Seagrass a go-to whiskey?

Barrell Seagrass is a little hard to find in my area and has a bit of a higher price point, so I’ll be saving this one for special occasions.

Is Barrell Seagrass priced accurately to its quality?

I do think Barrell Seagrass delivers on its price point.

It offers flavors you won’t get in many other whiskeys.

Conclusion for Barrell Seagrass Whiskey

I first had Barrell Seagrass when I took a trip to Louisville and Bardstown Kentucky with my friends for the bourbon trail.

My friend Chuck knew of Barrell Seagrass from some whiskey reviews he watches and got a pour at a bar we visited.

We both really enjoyed it then and when he had the chance to get it from Ohio, he jumped at the opportunity to add it to our collection.

What I like most about this whiskey is that it is a completely unique flavor profile that you will not get with any other whiskey on the market.

The unique combination of both American and Canadian Rye is pretty uncommon in today’s market, and on top of that, it is finished in three different barrels each adding their own flavor to the whiskey.

I’m a fan of fruit candies and this whiskey is one that I could drink all day long and really spend some time with each pour.

It’s also got a high proof point at nearly 120 proof and the flavors and mouthfeel make the additional heat really enjoyable.

If you see this one on the shelf, I would definitely recommend picking it up.
