Is Balvenie 14 Year Curious Casks an Approachable Whisky?
Balvenie 14 Year Curious Casks is a whiskey that has quite a bit of smoke and charred oak flavors to it so it’s a bit more bold than other Balvenie bottles.
While I do enjoy the flavors in this pour, I feel a little like the American Oak overpowers my favorite flavors from the Balvenie flavor profile.
Basically, if you’re a fan of American bourbon, you will certainly like this whisky as it really allows the American Bourbon Barrel flavors to shine through on top of the Balvenie profile.
Is Balvenie 14 Year Curious Casks Complex?
Balvenie 14 Year Curious Casks isn’t particularly complex.
It certainly allowed for a TON of the American Bourbon Barrel to dominate the profile and I’d be very curious which American Bourbon Barrels were used to create this whisky.
I feel like this bottle is actually less complex than the normal Balvenie lineup because the American Bourbon Barrels kind of cover up and dominate the lovely honey and fruits flavors I usually enjoy from Balvenie.
What are Balvenie 14 Year Curious Casks’s strongest attributes/flavors?
Balvenie 14 Year Curious Cask’s strongest attribute is absolutely how well they capture the traditional flavors of American Bourbon.
They advertise on the bottle that this is a collection of curious casks and it certainly is!
I can certainly appreciate what Balvenie is offering here and I absolutely get all of the flavors from American Bourbon layered on top of the Single Malt flavor of Balvenie.
Is Balvenie 14 Year Curious Casks a go-to whisky?
This is a bottle that I am happy to have tried, but I would never choose this bottle as my go-to over the normal Balvenie bottles.
I have so many bourbon bottles to drink if I want to experience American Bourbon, so when I go for a Balvenie bottle, this likely won’t be the one I’m choosing.
Is Balvenie 14 Year Curious Casks priced accurately to its quality?
I can appreciate the experiment Balvenie ran here and I am happy with my purchase of this bottle since it is quite unique, but I would have been much happier if this bottle were priced at $80.
You can get the Balvenie 12 Year Doublewood, Balvenie 12 Year American Oak, Balvenie 12 Year Single Barrel, and Balvenie 14 Year Caribbean Cask all for cheaper than this bottle and I would probably choose any of those over this one.
Conclusion for Balvenie 14 Year – Collection of Curious Casks – American Bourbon Barrels
Balvenie decided to try something new and ask the name of the bottle clearly states, this bottle is “A Collection of Curious Casks” and that is exactly what they delivered.
This American Bourbon Barrel Curious Cask delivers exactly what it says it will and is full of American Bourbon Barrel flavors layered over the traditional Balvenie Single Malt profile.
For me, I prefer the traditional Balvenie flavor profile over anything else, so it’s hard for me to enjoy this bottle more than their others.
Out of all my whiskeys, Balvenie is my favorite whisky distillery so it is hard for me to appreciate this experimental bottle more than their traditional flavor profile, but I certainly don’t fault them for experimenting.
I’ll definitely try other bottles if they continue the collection of curious casks experiment because I love seeing the types of experiments a distillery will try in the goal of finding an exceptional new combination of flavors.
