Dewar's 12 Year Double Aged Whiskey Review

Distillery: Aberfeldy Distillery

Region: Aberfeldy, Scotland

Aging:12 Years

ABV: 40%

Proof: 80

Price: $30

Appearance: Light Gold

Nose: Malt, toffee, cereal, light fruits – apple and apricot, touches of honey

Palate: There are definitely notes of light fruits – specifically apple, apricot, and light lemon. Less honey and toffee tastes than on the nose, but they are still there. The flavor is sweeter and less malty than the nose.

Finish: Once the finish rolls in I start getting a bit more spice and oak. It’s a rather smooth finish for a $30 bottle and it could easily be a regular sipper.

Is Dewar’s 12-Year Double-Aged Whiskey Approachable?

Dewar’s 12-Year Double-Aged whiskey is quite approachable. I was surprised by the smoothness of this one. You will feel a bit of heat on the first sip, but it mellows out quickly and is more approachable would be a great whiskey for Scotch beginners.

Is Dewar’s 12-Year Double-Aged Whiskey Complex?

For a $30 Scotch, Dewar’s 12-Year Double-Aged whiskey does have a bit of complexity. It’s not one-dimensional like many other cheaper whiskeys.

This blended whiskey gives you get a nice blend of malty, sweet honey flavors, and light fruit mixed with a finish of oak and spices. I was impressed with the level of layers for a bottle of this price level.

What are Dewar’s 12-Year Double-Aged Whiskey’s strongest attributes/flavors?

Dewar’s 12-Year Double-Aged Whiskey’s strongest attribute is definitely the price point. There are plenty of better scotches out there, but not anywhere near the $30 price point. If you’re looking for a well-priced Scotch that you could easily sip on daily, this is a good place to start. It’s also a great option if you’re looking to introduce someone to Scotches and don’t want to spend a ton of money.

Is Dewar’s 12-Year Double-Aged Whiskey a go-to whiskey?

I could easily see Dewar’s 12-Year Double-Aged Whiskey being an easy go-to whiskey due to its low price point and balance of flavors. However, if you’re an experienced Scotch drinker, you’re probably going to want to spend a bit more money and enjoy the level of complexity that comes along with your higher-end Scotches like Oban and Balvenie.

Is Dewar’s 12-Year Double-Aged Whiskey priced accurately to its quality?

Dewar’s 12-Year Double-Aged Whiskey is priced lower than its quality for me. I knew nothing about Dewar’s before I tasted this bottle and decided to gamble on the $30 bottle and expected it to be a bottle that would just sit on my shelf and collect dust.

After a few sips though, I rather enjoyed it! It’s easy to drink, feels bright and colorful on first taste, and finishes with a nice spice and oak finish. You can’t ask for more from a Scotch if you’ve only got a $30 budget.

I hope you enjoyed this tasting experience with me.
