About Little Book and Its Creator – Freddie Noe
My dad and I recently took a trip to explore the Kentucky Bourbon Trail.
I was celebrating my birthday and my Dad was interested in learning more about whiskey so we set out on our trip.
One of our favorite distillery tours and tastings was at the Jim Beam Distillery and I lucked out and signed us up for a personal tasting for a new product with Fred and Freddie Noe – the creators of Bookers and Little Book whiskey.
We got to set in a private tasting with Fred and Freddie and be some of the first people to taste their new product release – an American Single Malt called Clermont Steep.
In addition to the new product, we also got to try a few other samples including Little Book Chapter 6.
Luckily for me, I had purchased a bottle of Little Book months before this tasting, so I was already prepared and knew how good the whiskey was.
I brought my bottle with me to have its creator – Freddie Noe – sign for me.
I knew the tasting would be great, but what I didn’t expect was how down-to-earth and honest Fred and Freddie were about the strategy and thought processes they put into each batch of their whiskeys.
One of the most interesting whiskeys I got to taste during our tasting was called “Distiller’s Share No 1” which was a new product run that Freddie had come up with where they sell test batches of their experiments.
The one that I got to try was a whiskey where instead of using Rye grain, they used brown rice instead.
To my surprise, it was quite delicious.
Interesting decisions and experiments like that really increased my appreciation for whiskeys like Little Book and Booker’s where I was able to see how much effort and consideration was put into the decisions behind their blends.
I’ll never forget my experience tasting this whiskey with the person who created it, but fortunately for me… I was already a fan of it even before this tasting.
I even got a pour of it at the Jim Beam Pizza shop where they use the same yeast strain in their pizza as they use in their whiskey.
So without further ado, let’s sit down and give this pour a solid review.
Little Book Chapter 6 – Blend Composition
This whiskey blend is made from:
- 4 Year Straight Malt Whiskey Finished with Cherrywood Staves
- 4 Year Straight Malt Whiskey Finished in Applewood Smoked Barrels
- 4 Year Straight Malt Whiskey Finished in Hickory Smoked Barrels
- 4 Year Straight Malt Whiskey Finished with Maplewood Staves
- 5 Year Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Little Book Chapter 6 Tasting Notes
Appearance: Dark Amber
Nose: Butterscotch, toffee, vanilla, toasted oak, nutty, citrus zest
Palate: buttery toffee, nutty, toasted oak, vanilla, light fruit, rye spice, pepper
Finish: long buttery finish, oily mouthfeel – leaves you with buttery toffee and oak with a bold rye spice and pepper finish
Is Little Book Chapter 6 an Approachable Whiskey?
Little Book Chapter 6 is a nice flavor profile that most people will enjoy.
It’s easy to drink and tones down the heat a bit in comparison to its Booker’s counterpart (which I’m also a big fan of).
It’s not quite as bold as the Booker’s lineup but still delivers well on the flavor profile.
Is Little Book Chapter 6 Complex?
Little Book Chapter 6 has a lot of layers of flavor.
The nose is quite sweet with notes of butterscotch and toffee really shining through.
On the palate, you still get the buttery toffee sweetness but it blends well with nutty, toasted oak, vanilla, and light fruit notes.
The finish leaves you with a buttery mouthfeel full of toffee, oak, and vanilla with lingering rye spice and pepper.
Is Little Book Chapter 6 a go-to whiskey?
Little Book Chapter 6 is a very smooth and easy-to-drink whiskey.
If it were more readily available and not a limited edition bottle, I could certainly see myself sipping this one on a regular basis.
Is Little Book Chapter 6 priced accurately to its quality?
Little Book Chapter 6 costs a little more than a bottle of his father’s line of Booker’s whiskey.
Instead of $99, this bottle sells for $125 MSRP.
At the $125 price point, I think this bottle is worth the price tag because it offers a unique flavor profile that is pleasantly easy to drink.
Conclusion for Little Book Chapter 6
Compared to Booker’s – which is bold and in-your-face flavor – Little Book takes a more nuanced approach.
It leans into the more delicate balance of flavors that can be delivered without pushing the ABV and heat too far.
If you see a bottle of Little Book on the shelf, I recommend picking it up.
Since it’s a limited edition bottle and this release was the final edition of the lineup, I’d suggest keeping an eye out for the next project coming from Freddie Noe and the Jim Beam team.
And if you see a bottle of Booker’s on the shelf, that is his father’s product line and it absolutely delivers if you are a fan of high-proof, flavor-heavy whisky.
